What are the best foods for sustained energy?

Managing the obligations of work, life and family can be extremely hectic and can take its toll on our health, especially when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet. However, no matter how busy and stressful your life gets, your body should never have to suffer the consequences. The truth is that the human body needs fuel and energy, especially when it has to deal with so much stress. That is why eating the right stuff can help you fight daily tensions.

How does the body produce energy?

The body uses a process known as metabolism to turn the food and liquids we consume into fuel that helps it sustain energy. It derives energy from three main sources: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The body first uses its carbohydrate reserves to procure energy. Then, when the carbohydrate reserves have been emptied, it uses protein and fats.

The best foods for continual energy

The best types of food to consume for long-term energy are complex carbohydrates because they are metabolized slowly and the fiber that they contain is converted into sugars that are essential for energy. Complex carbohydrates are foods such as cereals that are high in fiber, wholegrain bread, starchy vegetables, etc. It is also important to include proteins in your diet, especially chicken, pork, turkey, and fish. Be sure to get a good amount of legumes and healthy fats.
Lastly, don’t forget that water is vital for the healthy digestion and transportation of nutrients.
